Entering a New Field: Build the Foundation Before You Accelerate

A practical method for reducing noise, finding the right path, learning quickly, and turning individual discovery into reusable team capability.

AI Summary

A practical method for reducing noise, finding the right path, learning quickly, and turning individual discovery into reusable team capability. I am Deng Yichuan, founder of GeekOnUp. Today I want to discuss a challenge almost everyone encounters: how can we become effective quickly when entering an unfamiliar field? At GeekOnUp, our work contains constant uncertainty. Customer requirements vary widely, and technology changes quickly.Without a method for navigating the unknown, teams can rush into execution before understanding the direction, wasting energy and missing the right market window.

At GeekOnUp, our work contains constant uncertainty. Customer requirements vary widely, and technology changes quickly.Without a method for navigating the unknown, teams can rush into execution before understanding the direction, wasting energy and missing the right market window.

-

The following approach helps us establish a mental model quickly and complete a useful learning loop as a team.

Why a method matters

In a dynamic market, customer requirements will not wait until a team feels ready.

When we enter an unfamiliar domain unexpectedly, how do we develop useful competence in the shortest practical time?

People often fall into one of two traps:

they begin executing on instinct without direction, or become overwhelmed by information and never begin.

-

Without a systematic method, progress depends too heavily on individual talent and improvisation.

I often tell the team:rapid onboarding is not about superficial mastery. It is about lowering the cost of learning through mistakes.。
A useful conceptual framework helps a team identify the leverage point faster and avoid unnecessary detours.

A more effective way to learn

People entering a new domain often repeat the same pattern:

  • they dive into details without a plan, collect disconnected facts without integrating them, and learn at a surface level that does not transfer to a new situation. Considerable time produces limited practical progress.

A more effective sequence is

  • to establish the overall framework first, connect ideas through comparison and application, then capture the experience as a reusable method. Learning becomes a compounding capability rather than a one-time expense.

Expertise is the outcome of deliberate practice

A three-step process

Research and reproduce

When people receive an assignment in a new field, their first instinct is often to solve it independently. That is usually the least efficient starting point. Begin by studying how others have addressed the problem.

  • Research:use precise keywords to find public material, case studies, and industry reports, then identify existing frameworks.
  • Reproduce:follow those frameworks once and make the established process work before attempting to innovate.

For example:when GeekOnUp began researching agents, we did not invent an architecture from nothing. We reviewed open-source agent frameworks from China and other markets and built several small demonstrations. That gave us both the technical map and evidence about which ideas could work in practice and which remained conceptual.

Organize and share

Simply reading material is not enough. Understanding develops through organization.

  • Turn collected sources into structured knowledge.
  • Explain the difficult parts clearly to the team.

Why share? Teaching is one of the strongest tests of understanding. If an idea cannot be explained clearly, it has not yet been understood deeply enough.

For me, every internal presentation creates an opportunity fordeeper understanding.Preparing to teach reveals the gaps.

For the team, sharing turns individual experience into durable organizational knowledge.

Synthesize and transfer

Once the basic framework is clear, identify the underlying patterns and test whether the method transfers to other scenarios. The objective isto learn one principle and apply it across related problems.。

  • Do not stop at surface familiarity. Practice repeatedly until the capability is reusable.
  • Under pressure, remain patient, return to the objective, and continue reviewing and improving the method.
  • Learning depends less on innate talent than on sound reasoning and sustained effort.

The value created

For the team:

  • new colleagues become productive faster, reducing dependence on a few naturally experienced individuals.
  • The organization retains lessons and avoids repeating the same failures.

For customers:

  • new requirements become viable approaches more quickly.
  • Projects maintain both execution speed and stability.
  • Across a long-term engagement, customers see that our decisions begin with their business objective.

That is why customers describe GeekOnUp not simply as a development team, but as a long-term strategic technology partner.

The right mindset

People often create artificial limits while learning:

  • 'The issue is not effort; I simply do not have the talent.'
  • 'I am afraid of making a mistake, so I do not try.'

In practice,

  • learning is a method, not a fixed talent.
  • Mistakes can be expensive teachers, but they are also unusually honest evidence.

Becoming effective quickly requires the willingness to experiment and review the result candidly.

Final thoughts

At GeekOnUp, this method applies not only to individual growth but also to team culture and project management.

  • Knowledge retention:every project retrospective becomes structured documentation so the team does not repeat the same failure.
  • Sharing:a technology session every two weeks turns individual learning into a team asset.
  • Feedback loops:inside the company and in customer projects, we prioritize rapid feedback and continuous improvement.

Entering a new field quickly is not about speed for its own sake. It is about finding a sustainable path through a complex environment.

Establish the right pace, understand the structure of the problem, then decide and act.

Many people work hard while remaining trapped by a confused direction and an unsustainable pace.

Real growth comes from finding the right path, maintaining a steady rhythm, understanding quickly, and moving beyond the initial boundaries of the field.
